MERCOSUR Common Nomenclature and External Tariff
The MERCOSUR Common Nomenclature (NCM) enables the customization and classification of goods traded amongst member countries, as well as these and the rest of the world. The NCM is based on the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System.
The Common External Tariff (AEC) was adopted in 1994 by the Common Market Council Decision’s 22/94. It is based on the NCM and defined by means of an applicable tax rate to each tariff item.
The MERCOSUR website offers a system to conduct NCM searches providing information of each item’s description, associated AEC and indication of whether it is considered a capital good (BK) or and IT and telecommunications good (BIT).
The search is conducted by entering a key word or number. The system then provides NCM matches for the description and for the code. Regarding searches by code, they can be done with or without the points separating the chapters, the tariff headings or subheadings.
